An art director is in charge of the visual and stylistic aspects of a publication, multimedia project, advertising campaign, and sometimes film and television productions. In English-speaking countries, the person in charge of the art direction of film and TV productions is most often called a production designer, a role that entails wide-ranging responsibilities. The production designer is responsible for the overall visual and artistic aspects of a film. They collaborate notably with the director of photography and costume designer, while supervising their team of set decorators, propmasters, and construction crew. It is also an administrative role: they manage the design budget and scheduling for the various professionals under their direction. As the film designer's responsibilities and field of activities have expanded over the years, the French-speaking industry increasingly uses the term production designer, translated as "chef-décorateur," and sometimes "architecte de plateau," "architecte-décorateur," or "superviseur artistique."
